What’s in the news?

One of the most commonly asked questions by my students at the beginning of the year is: “Where can I get the daily summary of the most important news?” What is the best source? There is no one answer to this question. In fact, I have a dozen and I would like to share some of them here.

I distinguish between two types of sources: videos and articles, and you’ll find them just below.

If you’re more into watching the news:

You are totally busy and it’s difficult to squeeze anything into your schedule? There is a great place for you – “One minute world news” prepared by BBC. You literally just need one minute and you’ll get a great summary of daily news in beautiful British English.

Imagine that you have a bit more time – say, 10 minutes? Well, there is a source for you – everyday, CNN News prepares an explanation of the global news for you. Their aim is to identify stories of international significance and clearly describe them while being objective and keeping neutral position. Are you ready? (and this one will be in American English)

But let’s say that you are this person that has 30 minutes to watch the news…Lucky you, and Reuters has something for you to offer. On their website you will find content rich in videos and a wide range of categories to choose from – from business, through politics to technology. Dig in 🙂

If you prefer reading:

I personally like subscribing to daily news and articles that are brought directly to my mailbox. One of my favorite are:

theSkimm – and it truly skims – through the news to give you the context behind the events and explain the main topics of the day – quick, fun, easily accessible and without all the noise. You’ll love it!

And the cherry on top – Pocket

Pocket will give you longer, more descriptive essays, subjective points of view on the variety of subjects from a wide range of resources. You decide which subjects you like and everyday you will get truly involving articles from the areas of your interests. It’s not really the news, but it will definitely broaden your horizons and develop your vocabulary (and don’t we want that?) So get pocket now (and there’s an app for that ;))
